Incorporated in the year 1908 and located on the Navesink River in Monmouth County, Red Bank was originally settled by the Algonquin Native Americans. Known originally as a cultural, economic and political center of the county, the recession of 1987 left it in hard times. It became known as “Dead Bank” during this time as property values plummeted and the economy collapsed. On economic high ground again, the Count Basie theater has become the center for entertainment. The musicians Count Basie and Clint Black hail from Red Bank, and Mrs Thurston Howell the Third, Natalie Schaefer from Gilligans Island, was born there.
